What if instead of wars, fighting and killing, we solved our conflicts via sports? Palestine and Israel could have a sharpshooting competition to figure out what to do next. Congressmen could have a fencing match to debate bills, or weightlifting competition. WWII would have been little more than what we call the Olympics today.

Of course, this just isn’t a likely scenario. The issues being fought are bigger than sports, and if folks are prepared to die for their cause then the issue will almost always get to that point. Some game theory in economics confirms such an inevitability.  Which is sad.

But it’s fun to imagine a world where we could solve our problems this way. Until then, we at least have the Olympics which are a wonderful event full of good sportsmanship and national pride. Enjoy the games, and go USA!
