In light of the close enough discovery of Higgs boson here’s a 3 minute video that does a pretty good job of explaining it.

The alcohol analogy is actually quite good I think. You can use it to explain the Higgs boson at a party. Imagine being able to create beer with starch, yeast, hops and water. You know these ingredients mixed together won’t make you drunk. But when mixed in the proper way it does. You don’t know what exactly gets you drunk, but you know you get drunk. You haven’t discovered alcohol yet, but you can see the effect of alcohol. Alcohol is the Higgs boson. We knew it was there, and now we kind of see it.

Higgs Boson is referenced at the very end of this video below by famed physicist and should be Japanese hair model Michio Kaku. But the main point of the speech is just to paint a picture of the world in 20-40 years. It’s a great watch, and at the end he explains exactly why Higgs boson was discovered in Europe instead of the US. Oddly prescient of a number of breakthroughs just this year, and this was almost 3 years ago.
