Hanukkah is happening right now. Not being of the Jewish faith, but having met many in my time here in DC, I decided to learn a little more about their holiday.
The History Channel has a great 4 minute video that sums it up well. Members of the Jewish faith are welcome to add more in the comments.
A couple of interesting facts about Hanukkah as it relates to Christmas.
- Hanukkah is not traditionally a big holiday, but the close proximity to Christmas has changed its meaning in a commercial sense, and giving gifts is a regular occurance.
- Ironically, Christmas is only in December to compete with the Pagan holidays Christians tried to replace. Hanukkah actually did happen in winter.
- Christians can celebrate Hanukkah. The events occurred more than 100 years before Jesus’ birth. The Bible verses John 10:22-23 showed Jesus in a temple during Hanukkah celebrations. If you didn’t know, Jesus was Jewish.
I may get a fact or two off here, again I’d love to hear from people that know more about Hanukkah.
