Instead of a fat tax how about the US government stop subsidizing the large agri-business. Without government subsidies to reduce the cost of corn (and other large agri-business crops), high fructose corn syrup and other highly processed foods would then become more expensive or on par with natural and other whole foods. Ironically we are actually paying a thin tax right now as the cost of these processed foods are artificially lowered through the use of our tax dollars.

I know what you mean, I've been crying all afternoon you bastard! My fat tax is voluntary, because some of us need such commitments in order to follow through. And the nature thing would work if there wasn't an equal amount of large women. The reason the government will get involved with obesity is because it's a problem we haven't been able to solve on our own and Americans look to the government to protect them from themselves. I support some kind of incentive program because obesity gets in the way of other people's lives. Ever try to share a train or flight with a big person? Not fun. Pant size under 40 and we cool. Over 40, you're now invading my private space.

ps, when I say YOU I mean all people, not you the weakonomist. I'm sure a few extra pounds only makes you all the more desirable, in a classically succesful and sophisticated way...

Of course, all guys think we're just a few pushups away from being back in our prime, lol

This is ridiculous, is this supposed to be satire?

How about this, everyone minds their own GD business? At some point our society has developed an irrational crippling fear of death. Sorry, but no matter how many situps we do, and how much ice cream we don't eat, or cigarrettes we don't smoke, we will still die. Death hasn't become optional, let people choose how they way they want to live and what will kill them.

BTW, nature devised an even better method than taxes to incentivize staying fit, it's called sex. When you cross that ugly threshold, your partner will go somewhere else for sex. Then after the breakup, you'll get your doughy-pudgey butt in shape so you can get some new strange. Maybe next time you won't let yourself go...
