I have an 8.5 year old toy poodle and recently spent $3,200 to repair an arterial cruciate ligament and patella on her right back leg. The vet told me that her left bag leg is getting bad. I can't afford to spend another $3,200. I hope she can live comfortably for at least a couple of more years. I know they are part of the family but you can only spend so much during these touch economic times.

I don't think id ever pay more than the animal is worth if the treatment is not worth it as you stated in the article. Although I would probably take care of a dog more so than say a ferret or rodent. When it comes to cost and reality when it comes down to it, its time to face reality if the pet has something painful and severe its time to let it rest. Least it went peacefully right?

I wouldn't spend a whole lot on our decrepit annoying cat, but then again, I don't like her. My wife would probably have a different answer.

A few years ago, one of our cats had emergency surgery to fix a blocked bladder. That ran almost $1000 and he was partially incontinent for the rest of his life. He spent the next 3 years slowly losing kidney function. We should have put him down long before he died.

We won't do that again. I'm not sure where the actual line is, but I'm pretty sure it's well under $500, unless the animal is young, otherwise healthy and won't have long-term issues from the treatment or injury.
