Ah, an excellent reminder to those of us out in the blogging world about the unscrupulous nature of some of those out there. Congrats (if belatedly) on the Plutus Award!

Want to make it even worse! They don't link to the "award winners" on the home page of their own site! I usually reply to those emails telling them that if they want a chessy site wide link...buy it!

I wouldn't normally admit to this but your blog happens to be second in my reader (and I read from top to bottom). I do think you're one of the best original writers out there. I'm kinda tired of reading one blogger regurgitate another's post.

Anyway, I'm proud of your ethics and the choice you made.

Oh, hey. That reminds me. You won an award from me for Excellence in the Field of Excellence. Just send me $100 for a licensing fee and, uh, design the logo yourself.

That's funny. My blog never wins awards, even the frivolous ones;) This sort of reminds me of the JD Power and Associates awards. JD Power is a marketing company. They want you to use their awards in their marketing. They're the exact opposites of Consumer Reports, who doesn't allow marketing. That's their business. Come to think of it, I've got to go. I'm going to call JD Power about giving my blog an award. And I'm going to post it on my site, no matter what it links to;)

I got the same award and thought it was pretty cool. I even thought, wow they have some cool badges, why not put something on my site? But I've been reading a lot about page rank and about how Google can lower your page ranks by having too many links that are obvious attempts at authority builders. So, my litmus test was to go to the Online MBA home page and look for a link to the list. I figure, if they're really trying to create a resource for their members, the list of 'best finance blogs' or whatever should appear front and center. So I looked, it wasn't on the front page. I looked through all of the links, resources, pages, etc. and it was nowhere to be found.

I e-mailed the presenter of the award and inquired about why this didn't appear anywhere. He e-mailed me back and said something along the lines of 'Oh, well the Online MBA webmaster is supposed to put that on, I'll have to contact him/her and ask what's going on.'

Well, I've checked back and so far, no go. The link still isn't there. I got the same reminder yesterday and haven't responded. I don't want my blog page rank to suffer. My readership is low enough as it is where I don't want to compromise that, and it's annoying that there are things going on like this designed to trick the unsuspecting blogger who will proudly post a badge thinking they're doing something awesome, but in fact are putting their blog traffic at risk.

Thanks for the post and for reassuring me that I wasn't crazy not to have accepted this award and given them my link.

Economists tend to not pay sufficient attention to the sort of thing you are looking at here.

They say "Business X gets more sale if it better serves its customers." In theory, yes. In the real world, there is often unethical stuff going on.

It' good to know the theory. And it's good to strive to make the theory apply in the real world. But that takes work.

The more that people sit back and say "the market will take care of it" the more the market fails to take care of it. The market is comprised of people. It is only when people like you take the sort of stand that you have taken here that markets can work.
