Hey Weakonomist,

I hadn't realized you had a new hundred south of the border. As a tourist to the States from time to time I find your bills slightly frustrating, but that's because I'm used to the color-coded version we have here in Canada. Our smallest bill is the Blue $5, then the blue-gray $10, the green $2, the red $50 and the brown $100 (I think, I rarely see them because most retail stores barely even accept them for risk of counterfits.

Thanks for the post,
Guy

I use cash for my spending money. I get it every week or so from the bank and use it for tips, splurge/pleasure buys, dates, etc. I find that it speeds up the transaction over CC (no signing needed, no need to wait for verification, etc.) and it makes me very aware of how much I am spending.

Plenty of non-blackmarket people like getting cash: Business owners don't have to pay the CC fees, waiters gat less and less cash tips so appreciate the cash ones more, the lad mowing the yard, etc. etc.

Ideally, we'll get to have it both ways. The counterfeiters will fool a bunch of criminals with their fakes (thereby ripping them off), but ordinary people will spot the counterfeits (and thereby not get ripped off themselves).

Better security features help ordinary people spot the counterfeits, so that buys us the second half of the "both ways" strategy. I don't see an easy way to get the first half, except to have stupid criminals. Happily, many criminals are stupid. So, we just might luck out.

Drug dealers need cash.

Isn't it our responsibility to allow them to continue their business unhindered?
