If I made as much money as Kobe Bryant, I wouldn’t mow my lawn, change my oil or fix the plumbing either. But, there was a time when I needed every dime to feed my kids. And, it was either do it myself or it wouldn’t get done. Plumbing isn’t something you can usually put off.

Now, I can afford to pay someone to mow my lawn. But, I am still glad that I know how to do this stuff. I am teaching it all to my son, so he can maintain his own house and cars in the future. It’s like Clint Eastwood says in the movie Gran Torino. It’s just something a man should know.

I actually change my own oil because it saves me time. I can do it faster then if I took it in. I think that is spot on though. If you can pay someone to do something which will allow you to be more productive at what you do, then do it. The sad thing is that I do a lot of my own plumbing. But, as you said, I own rather than rent. I’m not sure why that is an excuse for ignoring the concept of comparative advantage, but it totally is.
