"Personally, when my back charges me $2 to use an off-network ATM and then gives a quarter to the United Way, I’m a bit upset about it. Give me the quarter back and let me decide if I want to give it away or not. Or, since I’m a shareholder in the bank, pay it out in a dividend."

This sound like saying to your government: let me decide either i want to pay my taxes or not! We all have a responsibility towards the world we leave in (not only family and friends) and it's not such a bad thing to be forced to contribute to in it (mostly because many people wouldn't do it freely).

Corporate Social Responsibility has been hijacked by the marketing heads who see a possibility of increasing their brand equity by throwing money at anything that catches the public imagination. The original idea was to encourage the corporate to be more sensitive to the damage the company does in its own line of business ...and there is some damage to someone no matter what business one is in...so in a way when starbucks brings programs to ensure coffee growers don't get shafted by middle men, or when a power company decides that they do some rehabilitation for displaced communities beyond the line of duty, that is CSR...what we see now is a sham ....

And you give back to the community so you can brag about it in commercials.

Does the same logic apply to people?

Do we only help others because we want to be patted on the back for doing so?

It seems to me that corporations are just collections of people. Some corporate giving is indeed phony, to be sure. But some is not.
