The tech industry's taking off in the city in a big way lately.

Metro-North and LIRR operating costs are subsidized by Metrocard users, to the surprise of many commuters.

Upstate siphons away more in taxes from the NYC economy, which is just and fair, yet never even stops to take a breath when griping about the city. This continues, to the point where they cut off their own nose to spite their face. Better economic integration requires infrastructure and effort, yet (for example) we still have a pointless argument going on over mass-transit over the Tappan Zee, and Metro-North expansion further north.

The story of NYS history over the past 100 years has been the implementation and upkeep of the political neutering of NYC by upstate interests. NYC derives benefit from being part of NYS, but it's grudging and comes too slow to keep up with opportunities. Partially as a result, NYS under-performs on a national scale. Uptown political institutions have colluded for generations to ensure urban interests are not given a representational voice on the national stage - despite upstate urban centers' decline - as a stopgap to NYC deriving enough benefit that risks upsetting the political game played in Albany.

People really shouldn't wonder why NYC isn't the capital of NYS.

I was born and raised in upstate New York and it always irritates me when someone asks where I am from, I reply New York, and they ask what it is like living in NYC. My response is, I wouldn't know I have never been there. New York is a big state but no one ever seems to realize there is a lot more to it than just NYC.

Go Cuse!

Long Island actually houses two of NYC's five boroughs - Queens and Brooklyn. On a map it may seem like LI could be part of New Jersey or Connecticut but it's actually very close between Manhattan and the Bronx.

On top of the industries you listed NYC is also home to many of the top advertising firms.

Interesting fact: the only New York football team that plays in NY is the Buffalo Bills. The Jets and Giants play in New Jersey.
