I had a nice post written about this idea, but it got deleted thanks to crappy blog software.

So this idea is not a complaint against Hawaii, it’s quite the opposite.

Since I don’t feel like writing the whole post again I’m just going to summarize.

Hawaii became a state because the US wanted the military presence and the natives needed more rights to stand up to some farmers called the big 5.

The islands have been modernized but natives are now less than 10% of the population and mostly work low wage jobs. Who really benefitted from statehood then?

I’m worried that the native Hawaiians will go the way of the Native Americans.

I’ll have to come back to this idea when I get to Hawaii in the Tour of the Country.
