Not a bad list of controversial topics; I see representatives of money, politics, television and family all included. Add in sports (unless your family, unlike mine, all supports the same teams), and you'll have the perfect list of topics that are certain to provoke long, drawn out topics around the dinner table during Thanksgiving or any other family get-together holiday.

Great points to keep in mind for the Christmas holidays, too. And I'd add that in different regions/nations, certain topics can substitute - these are obvious and substitutes will be easy to find.

Plus, everyone's family will have their own two or three topic problems that aren't a good idea to bring up at the table.... this is a good reminder, though, to try to give it some thought in advance because it can be really easy to slide into something that's easy for *you* to talk about, but would either bore or even make others uncomfortable.

Employment - we've all have coworkers let go.
Food last year - My MIL's turkey was dry, mine was excellent. Guests were in Italy last year, had great lasagna.
Family drama - not so much
Jon & Kate - we ignored
Economy - we agreed that it would take some time for employment to recover, that it lagged the stock market.
Palin - My wife and I don't care for her, the guest wife doesn't either the guest husband found her entertaining.
Obamacare - Guests grew up in England/Canada, and were used to socialized medicine. This conversation ran the longest.

We were casual friends with this couple (our daughters are good friends) and this list gave us a chance to keep from struggling for topics, avoiding awkward silence. Pretty funny, not what you intended, I know.

All great suggestions. I don't mind bringing most of these up at work (yes, I am braving ruffling a few feathers), but Thanksgiving is a happy time, not one to argue about silly things.

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!

Nice list.
I printed it out, and will do my best to bring up every one of these topics today, it could make an interesting read, if I survive it.
