I actually like giving my information to stores that I shop at. I don't mind giving the information because I like the prices I pay to be as low as possible. I like for the items that I want to buy to actually be in the store when I need them. Merchants capture an incredible amount of efficiency by learning our buying patterns and in turn keep the prices we pay low because of that information. We, as a society, need to figure out if we are willing to pay higher prices for goods in return for more privacy. It is the Wal-Mart effect. Most of the time, we just want lower priced goods although we like to complain about how companies give them to us at those low prices.

Yeah, Rob, a government "final solution" for everything would be fine -- as long as they only listen to *you*, and not me, right?

People like you, who observably would resort to fascism at the first inconvenience scare the dickens out of me a lot more than the government does.

A typical Rob Bennett attempt to misuse government power for his own purposes:

Websites requiring registration are the worst culprits.

Providing your actual date of birth is risky because this is key to building a profile of your identity. I find it easy to give a consistent date of birth that is a few years away from my own. If you don't want to give out your email address, but need to receive an email from the company then use www.mailinator.com to create a (free) temporary email account.

Be a hooker, not a slut.

Neither option appeals to me.

I favor legislation reining in the uses to which personal information about me can be put to use by those seeking to make a buck off me or do me harm. When companies venture into the marketplace, they take on responsibilities. Those who use our personal information have violated the social contract and should be held accountable.

I have two business cards for this reason. One has all my info on it, including my mobile, one just has my work email and work address.

I never give out the right # to a salesperson while shopping. That's just annoying as heck.

I'm not sure abt my current grocery discount card, because I share it with Micah and he got it...but I've never filled out real information on those when doing it myself. There's no point, as long as I have the card. :) As it is, I know it doesn't have my name on it.
