I've never had a problem with the router, but I have the same problem you do with the wireless card in my netbook. After waking up from standby, the wireless card never works, and I have to restart.

INVEST in a good quality WIFI router. I have Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband router (refurbished on top of that) for a year and I may have restarted it twice. I have a secure network at home.

i have never really hated wifi because i have never had to set up the routers. i use the wifi at the uni and the neighbours(its not stealing. i just switch on the wifi button and the internet comes on. it is not stealing because i didnt hack his network, the signal came to me :)). the problem is the unreliability but the upside is the ablility to work from anywhere

I hear ya Weakonomist.

Wirelss can be a real pain in the ass, with some brands of equipment not being fully compatible with one another. Once it's working it's great... the only question is 'How long will it stay working?'. And for for some reason my wireless router keeps on dropping back to Open Access, it doesn't seem to keep the wireless security in place, which is a bit of a worry when you're on a capped monthly download plan.

The big upside of wireless of course is if you're renting a house and need a few PC's to have net access, it really is the best option.

Sorry you have had problems. I have had wifi for a LONG time. Never had trouble with it. I have used Linksys and D Links.

I do have trouble with my netbook connecting at times. Every time it comes back from sleeping it won't connect. I hate having to turn it on and off to get wifi.

I do agree that it should be easier. More people would have wifi if they knew how easy it is to set up and get running. The new ones are just about plug and play.

I have walked several friends through it on the phone.

Good luck on your new one working.

Not sure what you're talking about. I've been running wifi in my house since there was wifi. Never had any serious issues. Yes, periodically you have to reboot the router, but that in itself is not a big deal.

A couple of possibilities for you: (i) wifi works in the 2.4GHz band - do you have a cordless phone that uses the same frequency and is causing interference for you? (ii) some wireless internet service providers use the same band, so potentially you could be getting interference from outside; (iii) is your house really large or are your walls made of thick brick? Could be that you are simply outside the signal range.

It's a frustrating thing indeed. A lot of times you just have to turn it off completely and unplug, to get it working again.
