I have been a windows fan for a long time up until Vista. Vista to me is just like Windows Millenium, buggy and unstable. I loved XP and am thinking of getting a netbook for the one reason it still runs XP. At this point I am seriously considering an Apple which should be a wake up call to the Dell's and HP's of the world. Of course as far as stability, I have still managed to crash OSX multiple times.

I'm jealous. I'm in the market for a new laptop and usually buy computers very frugally (my current one is an off-lease ThinkPad I got for about $400) but I so *want* the 13-inch MacBook Pro. It's really hard to justify the fact it costs almost double a comparable PC, though, and that's what I'll probably buy. But like I said, I'm jealous!

Great purchase. I have had mine for a year and a half and love it. So much more efficient than the PC and can get more done at once.

I'm a systems analyst in the midst of a very large windows installed base at work, but I'm a Mac guy at heart. I've used Apple hardware for 25 years (since I was 9). We currently have a Mini and a eMac (7 years old, it's the computer that I used for most of my blogging activities.

I really haven't run into many compatibility issues, esp with the availability of X11-based apps. I installed DarWine on the Mini, to have the ability to run Windows apps without Windows. It worked decently well as a proof of concept ... and then I promptly stopped using it, for lack of need.

A laptop would be nice. Maybe in a few years, if my blog starts turning a profit.

iPod Touch is a cool freebie. I wouldn't mind having one of them, just to have a small WiFi device.

That's awesome, great gift and sounds like she deserves it, of course! I have a Mac desktop, I bought it 4 years ago to try it out, I certainly wasn't thinking about looking "cool" .... (since you mentioned they're often bought to create some sort of image, but I'm realizing now that probably comes from the higher price tag). The graphics of just about everything look a hell of a lot better on this machine and it has never had an operating system crash. I can leave 12+ files open constantly and do tons of short-term memory stuff and it's really stable. I will need a laptop or netbook soon, though, and am not sure which or which OS to get, since I want compatibility but also security.

I got a free Mac from my college because of a scholarship that I was awarded. Last year, when Dell rolled out the Mini, I immediately bought one. I love my mini, so I would definitely recommend it. It does have limited processing capabilities, but you soon get used to the smaller keyboard and fall in love. My sister, a spa manager, is currently using it, as having 2 laptops in my dorm room was redundant. Have fun with your computers!
