Yesterday, The Sheconomist and I went and got our marriage license.  For those of you not in the know, this is a document retrieved from the local courthouse that legally allows the couple to wed.  They are usually issued 30-90 days before the wedding.

It’s a pretty significant document.  Though they vary by state, with mine I’ve already signed my life over to The Sheconomist.  We both signed the document and from a legal standpoint all that is left are the John Hancock from the officiant and a few witnesses.  We literally have done our part in the eyes of the government.  It’s kind of scary.

But at the same time it is of course exciting.  This is a brand new journey for me and her.

I wish we were done in the eyes of our wedding guests.  Unfortunately, the wedding planning process has only hit 4th gear and we’re accelerating with a 6-speed.  As the day fast approaches, we hit new snags with vendors: problems with the music, issues with the invitations being printed wrong, and a whole host of other problems.  I’ve been telling friends that every girl dreams of planning their wedding, but as the day gets closer, they only dream of finishing the planning process.  It doesn’t matter if your budget is $1,000 or $1,000,000 you’re going to hit snags and stresses.

The important thing is to never lose sight of the purpose of all of this: to get married.  I’m as guilty as anyone else.  Thankfully the marriage license helps bring things back into perspective.  The simplicity of the form and how the whole marriage is laid out on one sheet of paper brings you back down to Earth and reminds us of what this thing is about.

It’s important to keep focused on these things as you move through life.  Don’t get caught up in the details.  If you are lost in a sea of stress and anxiety, look for the little signs that help you take a step back.  Today it’s a marriage license, tomorrow it’s…
