Every once in a while it’s a good idea to take stock of the important material items you have with you every day. It’s good to do this because sometimes you may not know exactly why you bring something with you wherever you go, you just do. Here’s my list, and why I have what I have:
Carabiner: This keychain wonder became really popular about a decade ago. I embraced it and never looked back. The convenience of placing my keys in a belt loop or being able to remove my car key for the service guy in just a second make this thing a wonderful addition to my life. I go through one about every few years.
iPod Nano: The iPod Nano first went on sale in the fall of 2005. By the December of 2005 I had purchased a black model with 2 gigabytes of space. Since then this thing has covered tens of thousands of miles in my car(s), hundreds of miles on foot, and a few dozen on a skateboard. This thing goes with me everywhere. And even though today the battery lasts all of 60 minutes and I want to replace it, the thing is still going.
Watch: For the longest time I couldn’t wear watches. I killed the battery. After college though I decided it was time to give it a shot again. Whatever it was that killed them seems to have worn off. My current watch was a gift from my then girlfriend (now fiancé). I wear it everywhere and it’s a little piece of her right near me. One of the spindles broke recently and I got it replaced, it was like watching your puppy go to surgery.
Wallet: I don’t like carrying wallet. It digs into my tush and has never been comfortable for me. So this thing travels near but only enters my pocket when necessary.

Rainbows: I don’t like shoes. My feet are wide and they like to sweat. Flip-flops, love them or hate them, are the best thing for me. I’ve previously owned 3 pairs of various types but my fiancé just got me a brand new pair to replace my leather sandals. I love them and after a few walks with The Boxer almost have them broken in.
iPhone 3G: This is the most recent addition to my collection of things that travel with my everywhere. One could argue I could dump my iPod and use the phone, but the phone is too big to run with and I like keeping the devices separate. I got the iPhone for the internet, not the built in iPod. I’m addicted to this thing as many can testify to.
Bonus:I don’t have this yet but I fully expect this newest item to become the most important of them all. It’s a wedding ring. In the same metal as my future wife’s rings, I’m looking forward to having this with me wherever I go. So far the most sentimental things I own are the watch and the iPod. The watch needs no explanation but you must understand this iPod has basically been with me for close to 4 years.

Being a minimalist, I try and leave much at home and bring little with me. Try a day with the bare essentials. ID, key, and debit card. See if it is freeing enough for you.
Well wishes…
