There’s been a lot of talk around the blogosphere lately about taxes (like there’s more than usual or something).  Specifically, the talk is about such proposals as taxing healthcare benefits in order to support a government insurance program.  Other talk is about increased income taxes on the rich, Obama’s commitment to not raise taxes on the middle class, and the fact that at some point we’re all going to be paying more taxes due to an ever-increasing national debt.

We often see legislation introduced designed to encourage or discourage certain behaviors.  For instance, a $1.00 increase in the gas tax would discourage the use of gas while raising additional revenue for the government to fund “green” technologies.  Because so many industries and products and people have specialized taxes for their situation, we’ve been left with a very complicated system where we are basically taxed for every dollar we make AND every dollar we spend.  This is essentially being taxed twice.

I don’t like complication in my life. Simple = better.  Supporters of the Fair Tax have perhaps the best proposal for a simple tax.  However it may not be the best system out there.  This isn’t a lead into other suggestions because I don’t know of other simple systems.  So it comes as no surprise that I’m not a huge fan of our current tax system.  You can argue that it works and that it doesn’t quite easily.

Now instead imagine a world where you can pick how you pay taxes.  How would you do it?  What would your dream tax system look like?  (For the record I’m fairly certain no one has ever asked you that question before.)  It could by a simple system of one tax on everything or as complicated as your little IRS worshiping soul desires.  Here’s my dream tax world:

No income tax, no IRS, no tax brackets.  You’re taxed on everything you buy.  Government can diversify their income by changing rates on various products (perhaps cheaper food tax on American grown produce or something).  This is similar to the Fair Tax.  Additionally, all taxes are rolled into the price of an item.  Go to the store and see a $1,000 TV, that includes all taxes.  Citizens are not responsible for filing taxes, the companies are.  They also pay taxes on everything they purchase as a company, perhaps at different rates.  Taxes are collected by states and sent to the federal tax offices.

That’s my dream.  Taxes should be a ‘duh’ thing, not a ‘dammit’ thing.  As much as people hate taxes they are a good and necessary reality of our lives.  Taxes keep us safe from criminals, terrorists, and other countries.  Taxes educate us, improve society, and pave our roads.

So how would you like to pay taxes?  What is your dream world?
