Stretchy Dollar interviewed a fascinating gentleman who is really a pioneer in personal finance. You might even call him a Founding Father of personal finance. That’s because it’s Benjamin Franklin! This interview is so entertaining because the author uses actual quotes from this noted historical figure. Creativity is a big win in my book, and makes Stretchy Dollar my editor’s choice this week. By the way, if you don’t know who Richard Saunders is, he’s perhaps the founding father of pseudonyms, so I’m very partial to him. Google it.
Here’s the best of the rest I’ve been reading this week:
Bad Money Advice strikes again with a look at LifeLock, the identity theft protection company. I’ve written about them before, check out Bad Money’s post to see why they might be done for.
Debt Kid got a reality check about life this week. Sometimes we lose track of how good we’ve got it. Have a slice of humble pie with the debt kid.
Saving For Serenity has created a method of tracking your spending called the entertainment matrix. Essentially you graph the cost of something you do for fun vs the amount of fun you get out of it. In economics, we would call this a cost/utility analysis (CUA). The results are of course objective, but you may find you save money on entertainment by purchasing video games instead of magazines.
Studenomics put together a list of money saving tips for college students. I’m usually not big on these but the studenomist has a way of hitting that ‘good ole days’ memory role in my head about college. Granted this was just a few years ago but bear with me. My favorite tip is to party like a student, not a rock star. Keg parties are a great way to have fun on the cheap. Beer pong, $5 cups, and you only hang out with people you like. Host it yourself and you can even turn a profit. Just make sure you’re old enough to drink legally, The Weakonomist does not condone drinking underage.
Be sure to check out the carnivals I participated in this week for great personal finance reading!
