weakonomist you have no right to critisize freidman. first you are a terrible writer. second, your idea that he's not doing his part because his books are printed and distributed is absurd. read farenheight 451 man, a world without books is a little scary. the arguement is not that we should avoid industry altogether (which would probably destroy our economy), but that we need to take a nationwide approach to a green industry.

SJ,
I know the feeling, I use goodreads.com to track what I've read and need to read.

Dave,
Those are great points, we must conserve our use and obtain higher efficiencies.

TIE,
Thanks for the link, now I have a new blog to read!

Josh,
Good luck on the book, it made me very sleepy most nights, it's worth it to get through though.

I'm reading this book on your recommendation from a previous post. I also read 'The World is Flat'. Thomas Friedman is a great author, and he makes lots of connections in the book about how we have gotten to where we are with this issue, which I have not heard anybody else make.

For a counterpoint to Friedman's flat world meme, see the work of Ed Glaeser. He had a NY Times Economix post recently. You can pull up some relevant stuff on Google: http://tinyurl.com/not-flat

I'll have to suggest that anybody who wants to be informed on this topic must also read books like "Gusher of Lies" and "The Bottomless Well". Friedman has made a lot of assertions about certain "green" technologies like Bio-Ethanol there are either ill-informed or overinflated.

Also, energy efficiency is a natural course, but people should be away that efficiency does not decrease energy use. It has been scientifically proven that energy efficiency gains have always led to increased energy use. Take from that what you will.
