I like the donations idea. I think we're really starting to see this as a viable alternative to just paying for stuff more and more. Its already starting to grow as a monetization method in video games more and more, and of course in blogs. Whats next, I wonder...

Thankfully it wasn't a failing hard drive. The picture I just borrowed to show what the BSOD looked like. I got the OS reinstalled but did lose her data.

Regarding the computer - I'm guessing it was probably just a failing harddrive, as the error indicated it couldn't page out or locate data in memory. Until solid state memory technology matures a little more, we'll be stuck with spinning harddrive disc memory technology, which inevitably fails within 3-4 years. Laptop harddrives are subjected to a lot more bouncing and voltage irregularities and so are more likely to fail sooner.

Wow, that's awesome!

I'm incredibly excited about the movement towards "free by donation" business. I think we're finally starting to reject corporate consumerism.

Sorry to hear about your computer - mine went down a couple of weeks ago, and the repair would cost more than its worth. Oh well - at least she gets a new computer, right?
