Another relevant theme is that power corrupts. The thirst for power is what separated the Sith from the Jedi. Ben doesn't care about power, Palpatine does.

Interesting stuff. I always thought economic message from the destruction of the Death Star was that, if you're going to build a massive doomsday device, you should take the time and pay a little extra to ensure that it's completely indestructible. That is, don't leave a two meter wide exhaust port exposed where any hotshot with good aim can drop in a few missiles.

I think the larger point the Star Wars series makes about government is not that it is inefficient, but rather that removing controls on how much power our politicians can use risks tyranny. Remember, the powers granted to Palpatine during Episode II led directly to his rise from senator to Emperor and the eventual dissolution of the senate.

(This is not to say that government isn't inefficient; it is, especially in democracies where votes and money can influence the politicians. However much of an underfunded bureaucracy Social Security might be, for example, eliminating or even tweaking it has become almost unthinkable. But efficiency shouldn't be the greatest goal of government; limited power overseen by the population should be.)

Roger’s last blog post..Five ‘Investments’ to Avoid

Dude, I will say you are one of the biggest dorks I know. If I being honest, I'm super jealous. Your last post about comparing Star Wars characters to politicians was awesome enough! This type of material rocks! I just wish I was creative enough to put the pieces together.
