The Weakonomics Weekend Edition is now simply “Weakend“.  I was tired of it, and so were you.

So I’ve talked about Twitter a lot on Weakonomics. If you aren’t on Twitter you probably won’t be interested in this post very much.

Listen up all you people who are on Twitter or are thinking about getting on Twitter. Don’t be a Twitter Troll. Twitter Trolls are after one thing, followers. They don’t care who is following they just want that number high. Many trolls want to bring that number of followers up so they can promote whatever blog they’re doing.

Trolls gain new followers basically by following other people. In many cases following someone will net you a follow back. So if I wanted to get 1,000 followers, I could probably get there by following 1,200 people or so. You didn’t earn those followers, you traded for them. If you follow do not expect that I will follow you back.

As of this writing I have 337 followers. None of those follows were solicited. They are people that are either interested in my tweets or just trolls hoping for a follow-back. I follow 101. I try stay below 100 because more than that is overkill. If you want me to follow you then you must impress me and continue to impress me.

Impressing me is no big challenge. I’m simple minded and even the smallest gesture gets my attention. You can retweet something I’ve said, or perhaps reply back to one of my tweets. This will likely net you a follow but it won’t keep you on my list. To stay on my list you must remain active, providing good content, retweeting, and interacting with the Twitter community.

So please don’t be a Twitter Troll; if you insist on being a troll at least don’t constantly beg your followers to retweet your blog post. Earn it by writing a good post. Get a good quality following, participate in the community, and don’t follow thousands of people in hopes of getting follows back. Yes it works, but in my mind it makes you a self-promoting whore.

Have a good weekend, I’m sure some of you will be busy finding more people to follow.

PS: To prove I’m not just in a bad mood I’ve attached a funny Lolcat. :)
