Hunh, interesting stuff. Being a bit of a greenie, and much more of a tech geek, this is definitely interesting. I suppose I shall have to consider something like this in the future ($50,000 is a bit out of my price range at the moment...).

I can't decide if the S actually looks nice or not. It seems like a good deal, though. Of course, I'm not exactly able to plunk down the money for one anyway.

The net environmental benefit would be positive because single point source emissions are much easier to control. Instead of cleaning up the dirty air coming out of millions of cars you only have to deal with one smokestack. With a little money and investment you can really scrub out the pollutants from that one smokestack (or have a "clean energy" source). I love the S, I'm dying to have one. Isn't she sexy.

@my life roi
I don't have the physical data in front of me, but I feel like I've read many times that the environmental impact is many times reduced. I think the new Model S will cost something like $5 for a full charge. Even in a coal-fired plant the impact on the environment is reduced significantly over a competing ICE (internal combustion engine).

The added advantage of using coal over oil for our cars is the fact that we use our own coal and import our oil.

A new concern will be getting the electricity grid ready for the load all these electric cars will draw on.

I would be interested in what the net effect on energy consumption and the environment is by using one of these cars.

You still have to charge it... so I guess it depends on what kind of power plant you have locally.

Now where getting somewhere. This is the first I heard of the Tesla model S. It looks great and the price point is even better news. The Fisker Karma may look a little more sporty but the range and power train design are behind the Tesla offerings. Thanks for the pictures!

[...] Weakonomics placed an interesting blog post on Weakonomics Weekend Edition: Tesla Model S EditionHere’s a brief overviewIt is possible that during this past week we experienced the fundamental change in the American automotive landscape*. Tesla, the appropriately named electric car company, announced their second production vehicle, the Model S (white on left). Tesla was previously in the headlines for their Roadster (red on right), a beautiful 2-seater sports-car that runs on only electricity. That car would set you back more than $100,000 though and is only a niche vehicle. Nevertheless, if I co [...]

I'm not a huge car person by nature, but these type of innovations really do interest me. I can't wait until they have an electric car that approach $20k sticker price. This is certainly a huge step in the right direction!
