This post and the comments are right on the money (literally). I just blogged about this tonight and then an hour later found this post, with great points in it. I'm glad to see others who have similar thoughts about where the blame lies (Revanche and Darwin's Finance) and how this uproar from our elected officials seems to be more about distracting us either from the fact that they are inept in their efforts or that they are trying to sneak something else past us (Ron@TheWisdomJournal).

Like everyone else, I thinks it's a mess that AIG gave bonuses to people who performed poorly enough that they did not prevent AIG from essentially going bankrupt. However, I also think we as taxpayers get shafted twice in this deal. To quote a point that I made in my post: "In normal conditions, our disgust could be demonstrated by not buying the company’s product, causing it to fail or severely stumble.... However, in this case with AIG, because we have bailed them out and won’t allow them to fail, it will only cost us more as the government has to pump more money—our money—into the company to make up for people not wanting to do business with them. That means we end up paying twice for a product we don’t want."

It's a quagmire, I just hope our government officials can stop digging us deeper into this mess in their short-sighted attempts to dig us out.

Great article. I had read about how AIG was contractually obligated to give the bonuses out, but to my knowledge, the contractual agreement wasn't highly publizied.

I am not intimately familiar with the auto bailout, but I hope that our representatives learned something from the initial AIG bailout.

Great post!

With all the attention being paid to this AIG dust up, it makes me wonder what our attention is being diverted from. It's like buying a $25,000 car and getting all crazy over a $25 floor mat.
