If that's a valid breakdown of frugal vs. cheap, I'm a combination of the two. I'm all about using money wisely and not wasting it. But I'm not into making my own soap. It's a waste of my time when I could be making money doing something else. Gotta' have a healthy offense to go along with your defense.

Yea it's true frugal does sound a little weird. "Frugal folks are passive, and cheap chumps are aggressive." - What a great line, so I guess I'm cheap. Keep up the great work Weakonomist

Hmm... I'm not sure I follow you on Buffett advocating frugality. He definitely encourages all those who ask his advice to invest in their skills first. LeBron James and Tiger Woods are two prominent examples, but I've heard him say the same to MBA students.

I'd bet that he'd encourage all to be aggressive, goal-driven cheapskates.

I'm enjoying the feedback. I guess I might have alluded to frugal folks as the more conservative types of savers. I guess you could say the frugal are the hippies and the cheaps are the drug addicted heavy metal types.

This post absolutely cracked me up! Good stuff!

I hate the word "frugal" too. It makes you sound like a financial pansy. :)

what an interesting post - I have to admit that I've never thought of the difference. And now that I have, I'm trying to figure which category I fall into. I guess the frugal. But I'm thinking I want to be more cheap!!
