Though The Weakonomist is impervious to economic pessimism the way Superman is to bullets, The Weakonomist does have a kryptonite. Like Superman, I take the necessary precautions to avoid the things that bring me down. I rarely get sick, but once a year or so I will get a cold. I’m a drainage kind of guy. Sinus headaches and sneezing, but mostly snot coming out faster than gravity can pull it. Drugs are great, but I do avoid them at most times. On Thursday, I caved and bought (off brand) Sudafed.
Sudafed is the best thing for a cold. Ignore the commercials about “some medicines only treat symptoms.” The cold is a VIRUS and cannot be destroyed. The only thing you can do is give your body the tools to fight it, and hide the symptoms with drugs. Sudafed, is a funny thing. At least in my state, there are two kinds. There is the weak stuff you can buy in the drug store, then there is the real Sudafed. Real Sudafed requires an ID and a signature. You must sign a release that says you do not intend to make crystal meth with the drug. Sudafed is a primary ingredient to “budget crack” as I like to call it.
Sudafed dries me up quick. As it’s non-drowsy and packed with stimulants, it can make the user loopy sometimes. I took my first dosage around the time I got the idea for Friday’s post about porn. I won’t give Sudafed the credit, but I said and thought a lot of weird things after I took the tiny red planet of cold symptom relief.
Since I’m not struck with fever and the lack of drainage keeps germ exposure at bay, I’m able to continue working without worrying my co-workers too much. But now the weekend is here and I’m going to take it easy. The Sheconomist, her mom, and The Weakonomist’s mother are out doing wedding dress stuff today. So I’m putting the feet up, watching some football, and playing my treasured Lego Star Wars.
Not that you remember, but I did a review of the first half of 2008 last summer. I’m working on a 2008 review that will include the subject matter from my first half review. I’m also going to make some predictions, just because it’s fun. Look for these in the coming weeks.
