Socialism is a proven "bad thing" for a nation and its people, see England and Europe today. Production falls, employment falls, creation falls, you get the idea. Now if the US goes to socialized medicine where will the system go? No return, other than government approved, for new procedures, meds, etc means less "new" meds, less income potential means fewer doctors, more regulations means more government workers who do not contribue to the national economic wage grouth because they are paid by tax dollars and it just recycles. Yes a better system should be found but not a socialist system, take some time, look at the history of other nations, see the experiences they have had, pick the "good" and forget the bad. The government that governs best governs least. See the U.S. Post Office as an example of government business. See the current medical programs with all their corruption etc. Why do Canadians and English come to the U.S. for medical care? England just announced that their system was 3rd rate. Think about it.

Subsidizing the alcoholic with liver problems is the price you pay in universal helthcare for not having the risk of being bankrupted by your cancer treatment.

I happily pay this price.

(Though its not like I have a choice, since I live in Germany, a country with a universal healthcare system, and I earn too little to opt out of universal healthcare. Still, I am content with it, and even if I could opt out, I'd probably stay in the universal system, it's a kind of solidarity for me.)
